Community Managers Should Be Working Towards Unemployment

Community Managers Should Be Working Towards Unemployment:

I agree with this, and it’s something that’s causing me some issues in finding a position i’d like to work in.

Since Social Media seems to be the current in trend in Marketing, a lot of companies want people to come on board and manage the company profile through Twitter/Facebook/Forums and Blogs, it doesn’t seem to be so much about actually building a community up.

News sites reining in nasty user comments

News sites reining in nasty user comments:

Are comments on these stories a social barometer or just malicious folk hiding in the anonymity of the internet?

What I do find interesting is the ways they’re trying to verify people, they don’t seem to have suffered a backlash similar to Blizzard with their RealID. Slightly different circumstances, granted, but it’s a very similar situation.

Times loses almost 90% of online readership

Times loses almost 90% of online readership:

This is a follow up of the post from late last week.

Quite a speculative article from the Guardian but I suspect that their figures are pretty close to the truth.

It’s quite telling that News International removed the Times Online from the ABCe audits, no publicly available figures for people to pore over.

What’s Really Going on Behind Murdoch’s Paywall?

What’s Really Going on Behind Murdoch’s Paywall? :

I can’t say that this is a huge surprise to me, with all the other sites still operating on a free to read basis why would anybody pay to read the Times?

It’s interesting that the sentiment seems to be that Murdoch is trying to reshape the internet, but I think this is one medium that he’s going to struggle to tame.

This sums it up for me ‘Why would I get any of my clients to talk to the Times or the Sunday Times if they are behind a paywall? Who can see it? I can’t even share a link and they aren’t on search. It’s as though their writers don’t exist anymore.’

Will it last? Murdoch certainly has the funds to throw at this.

Breakfast Bunker Briefing: 'How to Avoid a Social Media Crisis':

Great read on avoiding a social media crisis, and dealing with one if it happens. Social media is really changing the way companies act and think.

I’ll try and come back to address this more when my head stops spinning. Late nights and free bars are not conducive to a functional brain!

Bebo sells on the quiet

Jul 14 2010

Bebo sells on the quiet:

I think the major point of this is AOL bought Bebo for somewhere in the region of $850 million and it’s speculated that it has been sold for between $5 million and $10 million, that’s quite the loss.

You have to question why somebody would pick up Bebo, even for the low, low price that it went for. It’s number have been on a constant decline, even in its heyday it was only hitting 40 million compared to Facebook’s 100s of millions!

It will be interesting to see what kind of ‘niche’ he’s going to be aiming at.
